Don’t forget that your social media image mirrors that of your practice.

Facebook, Twitter, and social media may help you win over patients, but it could easily turn patients against you.

Chiropractors have spent a lot of time and  money building up their practice; from branding, marketing, and office aesthetics, to schooling, seminars, and coaching – just to keep ahead of their competition. So why is it that most chiropractors fail to keep the same standard towards their social media profiles?

Recently a friend of mine in Oakland named Jenn asked me for a chiropractic referral, and naturally I referred her to a chiropractor whom we have worked with in the past. Days later, Jenn couldn’t remember the chiropractor’s website address, so instead she performed a Google search on the chiropractors name.  The first link took Jenn straight to the chiropractor’s personal Facebook profile page.

As it turns out, the chiropractor had posted goofy and inappropriate pictures of himself partying on New Year’s eve like a reckless college student.  Comments and status updates on his Facebook page didn’t paint him as a professional chiropractor either.

Facebook, like most social media pages, has a loose and sometimes complicated privacy policy. Anything and everything one posts to their walls or photo albums gets stored somewhere in cyberspace, waiting for the right (or wrong) time to come out.  Damage done!

So my advice is to treat your social media profile pages with the utmost respect and care.  Always think twice about posting comments, status updates, or photographs that could be deemed as inappropriate and unprofessional to your potential patients.  Never let any of your friends post photos (or tag photos) of you without your approval.

An innocent photo of you and your friends enjoying a martini after work can be deemed as inappropriate and reckless by potential patients who want to place their health in the hands of a responsible professional.  So next time you are going to jump on Facebook, think of all the positive ways you can improve your image online, and get rid of all the negatives that could harm your career.
